A TEAM OF OREGON WINE INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS COME TOGETHER TO MAKE THE FIRST “ANGEL IN THE OUTFIELD” WINE TO BENEFIT A SCHOLARSHIP IN MEMORY OF ALL STATE SOFTBALL PLAYER MADDI HIGGINS
West Linn, OR – This month marks a heartbreaking graduation season for the Higgins family, whose beloved daughter, Maddi, did not make it to her graduation at West Linn High School on June 1st. Madison Riley Higgins, an All State softball outfielder, died one year ago (June 9th) at the age of 17, while a passenger in a completely preventable car crash.
$25,000 in college scholarships were presented in Maddi’s honor on Thursday, May 28th, which were made possible by generous donations from friends, businesses, and community members.
Today saw further support coming from the Oregon wine industry with the release of a commemorative bottling of 45 cases of a red blend donated to the cause. All proceeds from the sale of “Angel in the Outfield #5 Red Blend” will be donated to the LONG LIVE MADDI Memorial Scholarship and Teen Safe Driving Campaign Fund, established in Maddi’s name.
“Our spirits were lifted greatly as we felt the love of the amazing Oregon Wine Industry, which I am so blessed to work in as a label printing/packaging supplier,” said Maddi’s mother, Carrie Higgins. Higgins owns Crush Creative Packaging in Lake Oswego.
“While there won’t be any festivities to look forward to this week celebrating Maddi’s scholastic achievements or future college plans, we find solace and strength in continuing to honor Maddi’s life and hope to keep her legacy alive by helping to save and better the lives of others thru our ‘LONG LIVE MADDI – ALIVE FOR 5’ Outreach and Scholarships,” says Carrie Higgins.
The idea for the wine came about when wine industry friends and colleagues, Anne Hubatch, winemaker/owner of Helioterra Wines, and Leah Jorgensen, winemaker/owner of Leah Jørgensen Cellars, decided they wanted to do something to support their friend, Carrie. The two pulled together donations from other industry professionals to assemble what came to be 45 cases of an elegant 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Cabernet Franc blend. Hubatch donated a barrel of her Cabernet Sauvignon from Washington state and Jorgensen donated a barrel of her Cabernet Franc from Southern Oregon.
Other team players include: Tom Schaad of August Cellars, who managed bottling; Andrea LaRue of Nectar Graphics, who designed the label; Crush Creative Packaging and Taylor Made Labels for label printing; Pioneer Packaging for bottle donation; and Portocork for cork donation.
“We simply can’t begin to express the depth of our gratitude for the entire Oregon wine community and especially to this amazing team of players led by Anne Hubatch and Leah Jorgensen for the their beautifully synergetic winemaking efforts, and Andrea LaRue and Gwen Dimmitt at Nectar Graphics for designing the most amazingly perfect wine label and website, and everyone else who made this wine possible,” says Carrie Higgins.
The LONG LIVE MADDI Memorial Scholarship and Teen Safe Driving Awareness Campaign Fund is proud to offer scholarships to high school seniors that who ascribe to the Maddi Higgins Playbook.
